Award-Winning Distillery Is Noted For Craft Oregon Whiskey
PORTLAND, Ore. (July 15, 2013) — The Bull Run Distilling Company has been listed as one of “America’s Coolest Distilleries” by Travel + Leisure magazine. This attention from a travel magazine comes on the heels of a flurry of recent awards for the three-year-old urban distillery, which is already proving to be a top destination for tippling tourists and those seeking out uniquely-Portland experiences.
“All I can say is wow. We’re honored to be representing Oregon in this short list of distilleries. Now that’s pretty cool,” says co-founder and distiller Lee Medoff.
Travel + Leisure mentions Bull Run’s place-based ethos as a distinct point of difference, from their Oregon Whiskey — barley sourced from Southeast Oregon, water from the Bull Run watershed, and finished in barrels made from Oregon oak – to the locally made stills. The author also points out the pioneering distillery’s capacity to “go big out of the gate,” noting that its 800 gallon stills are among the largest west of the Rockies.
Bull Run Distilling Company launched in spring 2010, with co-owners Lee Medoff and Patrick Bernards dedicated to making provenance-based spirits, including pioneering an Oregon-style whiskey. “If Scotland, Ireland, Canada and Kentucky can create their own unique style of whiskey, why not Oregon?” says Medoff. Similar to craft winemaking, Bull Run’s barrel-aging program is designed to highlight the subtle differences between batches, allowing each to show the best it has to offer.
In addition to whiskey, Bull Run has a line of Pacific Rums, Russian-American Medoyeff Vodka, Temperance Trader “found spirits,” and a limited release line of unique spirits available only at the distillery. Their commitment to the art and science of distillation and production is what enables them to produce some of the finest craft spirits available in the country. Proof of this includes the recently earned Double Gold Medal for their Medoyeff Vodka by The Fifty Best, a guide to fine living. Bull Run’s other recent awards are listed below:
• Temperance Trader Bourbon: Gold, American Distillers Institute Spirits Competition (2012)
• Aria Gin: Gold, American Distillers Institute Spirits Competition (2013)
• Pacific Rum: Bronze, American Distillers Institute Spirits Competition (2012)
